VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO 2.0TSI
First Volkswagen Scirocco
Remember, it was in 1974, the first Volkswagen Scirocco landed on our roads?
Designed by Giugiaro, its concept was simple: a coupe affordable and look nice. Two generations are born and in September 1992, everything stops and VW makes no promises about his future. (Written by Jessica Paupinat)
16 years later, here is the new third generation Scirocco. Aesthetically, the new Coupe is proud to announce the future of Volkswagen style. Indeed, the Golf 6 will reveal that we at the start emulating.
Sort of mini shooting break, he has taken nothing from its past, its design is 100% modern.
Even if its forms are rounded, they exude a certain aggressiveness without lacking finesse, more accurately, his style is both feminine and masculine.
In short, the Scirocco is very successful and will impress for sure!
For its launch, four engines are offered: a 140 horsepower diesel and three turbocharged gasoline ranging from 122 to 200 horsepower. Later will come a 2.0 Tdi 170 horsepower. Series, these engines are mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Until the power of 160 horsepower is optional 7-speed DSG. For the 200 horsepower version, the box 6-speed dual clutch. The same one that we tested. This engine can not transform into the Scirocco sports coupe. Rather, a dynamic and powerful cut for all, where you feel good inside because it is well signed Volkswagen quality materials and finish, ergonomics well thought … no complaints, especially it is a true 2 +2 coupe.
It has been said, the Scirocco is not a sports coupe: its front end is heavy, the tendency of understeer is pretty pronounced, even if the DCC system is switched on sports. This system is based on an adaptive chassis: simply put, the suspensions are adapting in real time road conditions. Three modes are available: Normal, Comfort and Sport, the only mode where the system also serves on the steering.
We must admit, it was expected that the Scirocco is more sporty … However, it is comfortable, safe and ride up to its claims. Then we comfort also saying that Volkswagen could one day make a Scirocco GTi!
Volkswagen has really succeeded his revival mission …
Not always obvious, this Scirocco is a success in every way.
For many motorists, Volkswagen has a real credibility in sports car thanks to the claw GTI and more specifically to the first Golf GTI. However, apart from this shoe, VW has also developed models like the Golf R32 R or the Passat R36. Today is the turn of the Scirocco to receive this designation. And that’s not all, VW has decided to establish an independent body responsible for virility products catalog Wolfsburg.
Aesthetics affirmed
Let us say right away, even in versions less shameless, the Scirocco displays very specific lines that allows it to differentiate at first sight with a rear portion including atypical and very aggressive high waistline reducing significantly height vitres.Cette more radical version receives some specific attributes that draw heavily on the version GT24 engaged in competition. We get a new bumper with larger air intakes, lights daytime running LEDs, bi-xenon headlights and badges R split anywhere on the body such as the grille and door sills. Some developments also in the back with the appearance of a diffuser and dual exhaust.
Special treatment as for the cockpit with a tack reserved for this variation and aluminum components such as pedals. It is very qualitative whatsoever in the choice of materials or assembly. It is far better example than a Focus RS or even a Mégane RS Luxe. It has more the impression of being aboard a GT in a real sport and it is confirmed before the full equipment including automatic air conditioning, the directional bi-xenon headlights, navigation, radar back or the sunroof. It is far from the minimum staffing of a real sport!
However, do not be fooled by appearances because Scirocco does not do things half way and it asserts itself as a pure sports even if it seems to retreat from the Focus RS which remains the benchmark market. From the start, the engine graces us with a beautiful sound, while the counter hands are a nice dance before returning to their original position. This 4-cylinder TSI that combines turbocharging and gasoline direct injection is already well known as Team Audi S3 , Audi TTS, R Golf or Seat Leon Cupra R . With an output of 265 hp and a torque of 350 Nm available between 2500 and 5000 rpm, this four-cylinder produces more power (+ 15 hp) and torque (+ 30 Nm) than the six-cylinder version of the last Golf R32. It is distinguished mainly by its full character full of torque, which allows it to be easily usable in everyday use. But fortunately, he does not mind getting into the towers and did not hesitate to cross 6000 rpm. As might be expected the performance is leading with a 0 to 100 km / h in 6.5 seconds and shot dead a top speed of 250 km / h. Of course, even if Volkswagen boasts appetite Scirocco measured this by announcing a joint average of 8 liters per 100 km, the reality is quite different since we found 19l/100 km after our session and consolidated circuit dropped to near 15 litres/100 km in normal use, hence the time is less than 300 km.
For this test, our Scirocco R was equipped with the optional 6-speed DSG gearbox. Fan of the first hour of transmission, it has blown hot and cold.Let’s start with the bad points. In Drive mode, this box has moderately satisfied with small jolts during gear changes, a lack of responsiveness and acceleration bit blunt. Fortunately, there are other ways to control the passages of the reports since the DSG has a sport mode and paddle shifters that allow the passage of reports significantly faster with hits gas on downshifts. And that’s good because it is with these two modes that are fun and the more we become aware of the capabilities of the Scirocco R. To do so, we went on the circuit de la Ferte Gaucher. The few laps we have found that the front of the Scirocco R is accurate but barely register in turn causing a lack of agility. The difference is glaring example with a Megane RS.The Scirocco A partially offsetting that by a very good traction. The 265 hp to the front wheels go well aided by the XDS system, a differential lock on the front axle which is a function of the expanded electronic differential lock integrated into the ESP. This technology has been particularly sought on the circuit out of the corners where the XDS is triggered almost always overcomes all possible losses of traction. Easy and fun to drive, the Scirocco R has the great advantage to reassure his pilot very quickly and put in trust, all with measured risk as the ESP never fires completely, which can be frustrating for more demanding.
In terms of comfort, the Scirocco R is in the average vehicle in this class even if we recognize that amortization is firm and that the 18-inch wheels do not help the situation. Riding on rough roads can be challenging for your lower back. For best comfort, you can choose the option “suspension DCC controlled” that allows you to choose between three modes (sport, normal and comfort). Finally, we also blame the Scirocco is licensed only for 4 people.
