Volkswagen Golf 4 SDI
This review has been rated by 12 members of Ciao average: very interesting
My beautiful mother to buy a Golf 4 sdi last week. The style of finishing the Golf 4 was not old at all I think. She is black metallic, alloy wheels, darkened rear lights, short side exterior design is inside this very sport.
Engine
It 1896cc cube, the famous block which also benefits the TDI. It develops in 68cv 4400tr / Minute. Thanks to a good chassis balance is ergonomic interior is fun to drive. Although too noisy, even more than the Tdi. And it spoil comfort. At the time it was the access model diesel.
Performance
This block is identical to the TDI engine, but without turbo. The performances are not very impressive, I would even say it’s a shame that this engine was used for a car like the Golf, considered a benchmark for performance. For a car that weighs nearly 1,400 pounds, 68 hp power, it’s really not fair at all I think. This model of access would not be built. Besides the time she has not escaped the many critics. But this did not prevent the SDI to be one of the best selling model. So this model for resale will not be a problem. The Golf is selling like hotcakes.
Quality
Viewpoint qualté there is no difference with other models thankfully! The quality of material is exemplary, and I think it’s the only positive. In the inside and outside of it solid. A longevity assured. When we boarded, we feel that we are not in a simple car, one feels a certain prestige. The quality of materials is appreciable.
Consumption
It consumes an average of 6.8 L/100 km. With a tank of 50 L can be between 700 and 750 km. While TDI version can be done about fifty kilometers and more. Less successful is more expensive than the TDI, a negative then. But intense driving, it does not exceed 9 liters in the 100, which is not the case for the TDI whose consumption may rise up to 11 liters.
In use
It is comfortable, the seats mantien is correct, the ergonomic dashboard, handling not bad either. But the performance is very disappointing, is the engine is really noisy too. Whether low or high speeds nothing changes, it penalizes comfort. Especially when you’re stuck in town on the queue, it’s horrible! The stress of the line on one side and the engine noise of the other, we love! Especially in summer when the windows are down. We can not even listen to the radio without the volume high enough.
The performance is not satisfactory at all. This 1.9 SDI can not even rivasiler with a small Opel Corsa 1.3 cdti. The cons occasions, they are not bad. It takes good, even at low revs it meets the engine. One of the major quality of Volkswagen engines.
Conclusion
For those who do not care about performance is the sound, if you search a car safe, comfortable, reliable and robust, do not hesitate. But I doubt that people can do without the performance and soundproofing. Add to that an increase in consumption compared to diesel more efficient.
The Golf of VW has a Brand reinforced concrete on the second hand market. And the odds reflect this fact: they are high, see very (too) high. But this icon among sedanscompact really worth the shot? Caradisiac addresses this thorny issue …
Why we should go for:
- Some high performance engines and sober: the Golf has always been well provided with this side. Do-it was not the first to sport the logo GTI? And TDI diesel are well known and yet its still popular today. Their strengths: high performance for a ridiculous consumption.More recently, VW has grafted onto its Golf 5 1.4 petrol engine with double boost, known as IST . The coupling of a compressor and a turbo improves performance while reducing engine capacity and therefore consumption.Result, apart from the entries range, a Golf is never under-powered.
- An aging worthy of a good Bordeaux: compared to its competitors, the Golf has always enjoyed a high quality finishing, assembly, treated, and recovered materials. This results in an excellent aging. The interior retains its good performance, the noise only appear after a large number of miles or years, the upholstery is solid. Well maintained, a Golf will retain its luster for many years.
- Reliability improvement: the fourth generation Golf has seen dark hours in terms of reliability , especially mechanical. Fouling flow resulting in power loss on TDI, turbo seizing on these same blocks, catalysts fragile gearbox trouble, were commonplace on the Golf 4. Fortunately, these defects tend to disappear, cars passing in turn affected the workshops of the mark.Electronic side, no problem recurring, and equipment side, nothing to report, except for the famous power window problems on the Golf 4, which fell in the road one after the other until 2001. But VW took charge if the car had less than 5 years and 100,000 km (he had sometimes “stressed” …). For its part, the Golf 5 has experienced some teething troubles, quickly solved by the network. Today, owners expose few objections. A purchase will therefore be confident.
Resale assured: all owners of Golf knows he will not have too much trouble to sell his car, even if it’s less true today than one time. TDI versions (three quarters of the market) quickly find buyers. The models are less successful gasoline but also flow with ease. Yes, even today, buy a Golf is synonymous with easy resale.
What can be intimidating:
Rates not always justified: if, as we have just seen, the resale of golf is easy and is done at the right price, that’s another story for purchase. In fact, riding on its success, many sellers are more than greedy. The ratings are at levels well above rivals in category ( Xsara , 306 , Megane , Fiat Stilo , Ford Focus , Opel Astra ). A vintage engine and finishing count equivalent to about 10 to 15% more. Two reasons: nine higher price, but also a discount less than the average. This is somewhat less true for the Golf 5 , VW has since played tighter prices on this generation, and will in time is less.
- A cost to use fairly high: the Volkswagen are not deemed to be economical in maintenance. Golf is no exception to the rule. Revisions are expensive, especially if one opts for interviews “Long Life” (diesel). The lubricant used is horribly expensive, but allows to double the time between overhauls. Spare parts are also very expensive compared to competition, notably French and do not last longer specially. Insurers are also fairly cows with compact Teutonic: it is more expensive to ensure that French in the same category (5%)
Stock
Overall, to have a Golf 4 or 5 on occasion proved to be a good plan. Good resale benefits high-flying, build quality, longevity, benefits outnumber the drawbacks. But be careful with the Golf 4 TDI built between 1998 and 2001, the worst in terms of reliability. Be especially careful to follow their good after-sales. And plan a budget to use a bit beefier than a French one. And yes, drive Golf has a price …
